Someone else's dream
I looked at my watch quite frequently during Morvern Callar. I first felt impatient during the opening sequence which seemed unnecessarily drawn out. I'm sure living with a corpse in a small apartment for apparently several days can't have been very pleasant as decay starts to set in.
There are other parts of the film that just don't ring true, either. How did she use her boyfriend's debit card to get access to his entire balance? Also, I can't believe that the publishers would find her a credible author. I would have been very suspicious of her attitude and empty-headedness.
There were some beautiful images and some likeable scenes in this film, but it was like sitting through someone else's dream. The more I think about this film the less I really like it. Downgraded from my initial score of seven to a six.
I have to say that Samantha Morton is a superb actress. She doesn't play a part so much as become the part. I only hope that she's grounded enough in real life to survive this kind of immersion in her roles.

TOTALLY STUPID
This stupid movie is for the morons. As S2pid as the title implies, this movie is said to be based on a song popularized by a rap group whose members are also stupid! "Stupid! Stupid!" as what the song's chorus goes (so sad, it vandalized the lines from Barbara Streisand's Ever Green). I can't write a line without the word stupid in it. So better not watch this movie, or I'm gonna call you stupid!

Wonderfully weird
Found a VHS in a car boot sale, paid three pounds and found the most obscure and original movie I've seen in years. The narrative is made up from three leads seemingly recounting random anecdotes. Suddenly they one by one appear again telling more stories on the same topics but this time as different personalities, this happens a third time. They are in front of some of the wackiest backgrounds I've ever seen. Sometimes they are beautiful sometimes plain daft. The effect is laid back and relaxed but compulsive viewing. Staggeringly off kilter from Hollywood fodder, in fact a million miles away from it. The influences of Jarman survive and can be found in this rare abstract work of genius.

This movie is so cute!
This movie is adorable!
I normally wouldn't see a Korean film since I don't understand Korean.
BUT a friend showed this to me and I loved it!!! It is such a cute love story, sort of like a Korean "Sleepless In Seattle" or "While you are Sleeping". It is a story of a man who loses some of his memory and tries to piece it all together. While this is happening, there are flashbacks to the past. It is very intricate and you want to immediately watch it again after the first time just to see all the clues you missed in the first time.
I'm normally NOT attracted to Asian men BUT the leading man gets MORE AND MORE adorable as the movie continues.
The only reason I didn't give it a 10 is because nothing is perfect.

Odd
This is an odd little film that has depicted ordinary life empathetically. The plot is very weird, it like a story within a story and these stories are parallel.
I like how the movie is presented, it is on a realistic basis, in a realistic city like Hong Kong but the storyline is almost surreal. Applause for the actors and the portrayal of their roles. Everyone has acted their role so strongly and their acting is harmonically woven into a movie.
I was captured by the movie and the title. I thought they are odd which makes the ordinary lives of its characters to be abstract. Thus making reality abstract.

An ode to self-destruction and alienation in the form of a brooding yakuza movie
Who said only Americans had the right to remake, defile or reinterpret, their crime classics? By adding a new 40-minute third act on Kinji Fukasaku's original 1975 film Takashi Miike firmly leans towards the second option. A reinterpetation faithful in spirit and gritty hardboiled realism to the original yet still as much a Miike film as anything else he's done, this reflected in the Japanese title of the movie ('New' Graveyard of Honor), in itself perhaps a tribute to Fukasaku's sequel series 'New' Battles Without Honor and Humanity, and the numerous gonzo stylistic flashes that fully complement the hand-held hyperkinetic style Fukasaku pioneered and which Miike here reintroduces, not in an attempt to ape the original film and not to the extent that Fukasaku used that style nor with the same deftness, but as a visual technique Miike makes his own for the duration of the film.
As with the original film, the emphasis here is not on a Scarface-like rags-to-riches arch but on downfall, one long unbroken fall from grace, an ode to self-destruction and alienation as only the Japanese know how to do them. The brooding yakuza protagonist finds himself in a vicious endless cycle of violence as meaningless as the catalyst that kicked it into motion (a two-hour visit at the dentist by his boss) and there's no bottom or depth low enough for him to sink to.
Miike follows all this in a sombre distanced way, allowing the brutal stabbings and shootings to take place without either glorifying or shying away from them, this helped to a good degree by a languid jazzy score and a lack of depth or dimension to the supporting characters or indeed the protagonist. We don't know these people. We don't know any more about the protagonist after two hours than we did after he first stops a yakuza hit-man by breaking a chair on his head. He goes about killing people and shooting dope, stopping only long enough to rape his girlfriend or signal to the cops that he's out of bullets.
Miike being Miike, the movie is still crazy and OTT, as though he doesn't want us to take it anymore serious than we need to. I'm a big fan of yakuza pictures and Miike's Graveyard remake ranks highly among them, quite possibly the best of the several he's done. More than two hours long, the movie feels epic without ever calling attention to itself as such. Miike is not doing THE GODFATHER any more than he's doing SCARFACE. Curiously for a remake and especially compared to slick Hollywood gangster movies or quirky crimedies, Graveyard is original above all else. If I have a problem with it, is only in the hard edge of the video look on which Miike (probably for reasons of budget) insists on shooting, and that 15 minutes could've been trimmed for tightness.

Shot itself in the foot
Usually an Asian film based on the mafia/yakuza or the police with nothing but gunfights will be instant crowd pleasers with most men. There is not much to it as all you need is good choreographed scenes, high body count and a lot of bullets flying throughout the movie. This film took a rather simplistic formula and completely botched it. In real life, you'd never give a child nor an idiot a gun and just tell them, "Go kill people with it." This film lets 4 bumbling idiots go shoot at anyone they want. At times, I wasn't sure if this film was trying to be a serious film or just a bad comedy. If you want to play a cruel joke on your friends who are into Asian action films then have them watch this film. For anyone else, avoid this film.

Shannen Doherty was Outstanding
Always liked Shannen Doherty and in this film she really put her heart and soul into her role and showed what a great talent she really has to offer Hollywood. Shannen plays (Sarah Reynolds),"Another Day" TV, 01, who is married and seems to be drifting a part from her husband who wants children, but Sarah is just not quite ready for the patter of little feet around the home. The film starts right from the beginning with lots of violence and manages to have a story that never seems to end. The plot has many twists and turns, people go to jail who are innocent and the guilty seem to be release in order to start more torture and death. Shannen Doherty looked very sexy and attractive in this film and I only wish Shannen would get her act together in real life, so we can look forward to more of her acting career and great talents.

a first movie
The author wrote for TV before but it is her first long-feature movie. Well it has a lot of what first movies have : good ideas, not so well used.
Maybe the writer/director did not "live" enough to have an indeep feeling of those terrible matter, love and sex, male and female, human or puppet.
Some parts are realy funny, some others lacks of something.
Some situations can't work but no fictional gift is made to make us believe to them so... I'd say : watchable, could have been much better (or much worst too). I'd love to see a such subject writen by a 50 old woman for instance. The acting is not bad but the parts are not always well written.

Doesn't Quite Work
On paper FEDERAL PROTECTON just seems a workman like revenge thriller where someone turns stool pigeon and the mob have to hunt him down to keep his mouth shut and perhaps if the plot had been structured like this it might have worked slightly better . The problem is the story gets sidelined with a major subplot featuring someone wanting to make a lot of money by knowing where the stoolie is
Perhaps screenwriter Craig Smith can be excused slightly since my gut instinct is that director Anthony Hickox is more to blame for the film's failings . Hickox father Douglas was a director who could his turn his hand to different types of genre in films as diverse as THEATRE OF BLOOD and ZULU DAWN . Anthony is better known for his early horror films and seems slightly out of his depth as to how he should approach the material here . The film has the look of a lightweight 1980s film which seems at odds with the Taratinoesque dialogue though sometimes it delves in to erotic comedy thriller
That said Hickox has done well to cast Dina Meyer as Bootsie Cavander . She smoulders as a femme fatale who recognises a scheme to make money . Unfortunately the film seems to be pulling in different directions because the screenplay doesn't seem to have Bootsie as the main character but Ms Meyer is undoubtedly the best aspect of the film in much the same way as Linda Fiorentino is the best thing about THE LAST SEDUCTION . Perhaps the director should have insisted on a rewrite after the casting had been done ?

Heartwrenching view of abortion
This is something you never see on TV or on film, for that matter. "Destiny" tells the story of Jen (Jerri Manthey of Survivor fame) who as a photojournalist has a fling with a good looking cop she meets on assignment and finds herself pregnant even though they used a condom. She waits several weeks before telling anyone and when she does, her best friend seems to suggest she really doesn't have a choice but to terminate her pregnancy as a young, struggling career woman. The cop seems sad that this has happened, so he offers to pay for it, without even the idea she may decide to keep it. She tries to get counseling at a clinic but instead gets the impression she might as well, neither she nor the fetus will feel pain and it'll be over soon. So she does it, but isn't the same. She's hearing music, and her best friend thinks she's lost it because she's taking photos of kids all the times. No one else hears the music she hears so one night she decides to follow it...I won't ruin the ending but it is haunting.
