Not What You Expect.

"Perfect Lies" is a very good movie. The plot is about Toby (Brettanya Friese) who is a private detective. She has to deal with sleazy lawyers all day, and she is not very happy about her current employment situation. Toby has a drug problem, which only fuels the fire in terms of her anger about the job. Can she get under from all this depression? The box art for "Perfect Lies" makes it look like an erotic action film. It's not, it's actually a subtle and interesting drama. The acting for the most part is above average. Brettanya Friese is great in her role. For a low budget film it's very slick.

In the end: If you expect a erotic thriller, look elsewhere. It's a well-made mystery/drama that's definitely worth seeing.

Unconventional within Miike's oeuvre, but fairly conventional in general

This is actually a prequel to Young Thugs: Innocent Blood. It takes place when the main character of that film, Riichi, is around 10 and takes place in 1969 and '70. And this is, with little doubt, Miike's gentlest and sweetest film. The boys do get into fights, but all the violence happens offscreen. The kids will run into a battle and it will cut, and in the next scene they will have bloody lips and so forth. There's all of one scene where anybody gets hit on screen. It's actually quite a charming film. I did have some problems connecting events and characters (what did the strippers have to do with anything, for instance?). Coherency is Miike's major problem as a director. But I also have to admit that I had to split the film into two halves, and that the first half I watched while egregiously tired. I could also argue that this is Miike's most conventional film. It's shocking how unconventional it is within his own oeuvre, and it's tempting to like it more than one should for that reason alone. But there are many American movies that have done this type of thing just as well or much better, including Stand By Me and My Girl. The film even comes with a couple of doo-wop songs on the soundtrack (and they're in Japanese). Miike's direction is very good, of course, and if you are wondering about the director but can't take violence, this could be your best bet. Though there are a couple of bits that are direct references to Young Thugs: Innocent Blood, it would work as a stand-alone piece.

Review :

Wildly Uneven and Ultimately Disappointing

In some ways a creative and highly unusual film based in a Manila slum. The Tagalog dialogue and quirky characters give the film promise. Unfortunately there are enough egregious scenes and acting to make you cringe.

Lots of gratuitous sex and violence punctuate a very thin plot. Without sexy Rosana Roces to highlight unrated DVDs, I bet this movie disappears after release. It might have been better that way. Too many scenes with people yelling and breaking things quickly become grating. The main character is particularly annoying. You almost root for the bad guys when they torture him.

You've probably never heard of anybody in this movie, but it's definitely worth a look (if you have nothing better to do)

The box cover compares itself to Quentin Tarantino. I assume this movie is trying to be similar to Reservoir Dogs. That, I can tell you, it's definitely not. The only real comparison that can be made is the fact the movie is about a bunch of criminals involved in a heist-gone-wrong. It's not necessarily a bad thing. Although, I do have to say the first scene made the movie pretty predictable, even if you're not looking too hard. It has it's own style, which it should be proud of. It really was better than I thought it would be, and I didn't catch myself watching the clock throughout. Thomas Baumann both directed and wrote the film so I guess I should give him credit, even though I've never heard of him or any of his other movies.

The movie itself starts off slow but it really does get witty and picks up the pace once it gets through the clichéd beginning. There are two notable scenes I will always remember (I won't spoil it here for you, but when you see the "Duncan Proof Knot", that's one of them).

The best actor in the movie is Kelvin Webb, who has no other credits but has an uncanny resemblance to Laurence Fishburne. On the opposite end of that is Kip Ellwood who played the "Head Hillbilly In Charge", so to speak. I really didn't like his performance as it seemed as if he's trying to hard to be a mean hillbilly. The rest of the cast is just mediocre. All the hillbilly family reminded me of the family from House Of 1000 Corpses. Could be just me, but I liked these hillbillies better than Zombie's version and thought they were a bit more humorous (if Zombie's were meant to be humorous at all).

Overall, it's worth a look, bad acting from Kip Ellwood aside.

Vivian Hsu is good in her small part but the rest is mostly lame

This movie attempts to cast itself as one of those period-piece Kung Fu romances that combine beautiful scenery, very handsome heroes, very wicked villains, exciting and balletic fights, heroic struggles, and romance. Almost, but not quite. The story, which takes place during a Japanese occupation of Taiwan in the late 19th century, substitutes hatred of the Japanese for every other virtue. Typically, for a Taiwan production, the oppressed people and the hero talk about "Taiwan" and not about "China". The hero as a boy witnesses the death of his mother, hides in a company of performers, survives a massacre, kills a Japanese officer, hides again, and witnesses the death of his master. This transforms him into a Robin-Hood-like figure, complete with a scam-artist sidekick. His true love (Vivian Hsu) has moved from a brothel to the quarters of the Japanese governor. Tragedy ensues. The plot continuity is choppy, the writing (as far as I can tell from subtitles) is just plain bad, the fights are often needlessly and explosively bloody, the integrity of the hero compromised, and the "patriotism" little more than common agreement that the enemy is nasty. The hero (Jimmy Lin) does his best with a bad script, and the sidekick is amusing, and Hsu plays her part with the open tenderness that she does so well—she really ought to have better parts in better movies. Only die-hard Vivian Hsu fans will want to see this movie. It's a mess, except as noted.

Multi Starrer Movie-Akshay and Nagarjuna rule

Angaaray is a remake of State of Grace which has been remade by bollywood in the forms of Annarth and Footpath The story is about a cop played by Akshay Kumar, trying to reform his childhood friends played by Nagarjuna and Paresh Rawal, who have been sucked into the world of crime and work for Gulshan Grover.

The film is about how Akshay Kumar will reform his friends The Performances of Akshay Kumar,Nagarjuna and Paresh Rawal rule the whole film.Gulshan Grover,Pooja Bhatt and Sonali Bendre are awful.Although Gulshan and Pooja are wonderful actors but here they could have been better.

Little suspense, few surprises, dull action.

This 1998 film was a remake of the 1971 hit movie Female Prisoner 701: Scorpion. Here, Nami once again gets thrown in the slammer and has to contend with the usual Babes-Behind-Bars clichés: belligerent fellow prisoners, deviant prison officials and rampant institutional injustice. Cult actress Meiko Kaji (Lady Snowblood), who played the title role in the earlier Scorpion movies appears here as a nasty prison official, and you can see right on the box what the main problem with this remake is: Meiko (lower corner) has a darkly intense charisma which shows up even in a still shot but the actress chosen for the lead role, Chiharu Komatsu, while quite beautiful, has no such presence. None. With an interesting lead character to follow around, the paint by numbers plot and routine action might have been tolerable, but Chiharu's just boring and so is everything going on around her. Once again, as in the original, Nami attempts a jailbreak, but unlike the original which had a fairly exciting jailbreak sequence, what should have been the main action sequence in the movie was something of a snore.

Nothing much worked in this one. Unimaginative, unoriginal and dull is a bad combination in action cinema.
