breathtaking expressionist experimental grotesque oneiric horror hardcore nightmare

The summary could be enough to describe this film! MONDO WEIRDO: A TRIP TO PARANOIA PARADISE (the international title of Jungfrau Am Abgrund) is one of the greatest movies of all times! Of course we're not talking of conventional cinema...this is pure madness, a sick perverted hallucinating nightmare! It keeps you glued to the screen, from the first second to the last one!!! Non-stop breaking madness underlined, no, glorified by a soundtrack that alone could be one of the TOP experimental/new-wave records of the 80s, if only it had come out as a record! This movie has got it all: horror, grotesque, surrealism, expressionism, sick hardcore sex (straight, homo and lesbo), grand-guignol, insanity! All put together with such a brilliant taste...of course a sick taste...but so powerful, inventive, fresh, bursting...it's similar to the early works of people like Richard Kern and Nick Zedd (NY Underground cinema), but WAY more intense and breathtaking! I watched it the first time in 1992. It went straight to my cortex, it kinda possessed me for days, months, its images kept on floating in my mind, along with that incredible music! I watched it countless times, and it never gets boring...it's like listening to a great record...the more you know it the more you enjoy it when you put it on!!! ...few films can have this quality, let me tell you!!! This is no doubt Andersen's masterpiece...and even if no other will follow, I think he should deserve a first place in the history of sick movie-making! This movie is now in my DNA!

Slow burner, but delivers a worthy pay-off with patience

RONIN GAI, or "Masterless Samurai Street" if you prefer, can be seen as a precursor to films like TWILIGHT SAMURAI which focus on the tragic aspect of the samurai at the end of the era where they were the big shots. The film focuses on a small community of outcasts - former Samurai who are doing various menial jobs to earn their living (or just not) and prostitutes for the most part. They're a damaged bunch of people, and the men in particular are not very nice. Their lives are hardly peaceful and orderly to start off with, but they're messed up further when prostitutes start turning up dead - killed by a fairly expert sword, apparently.

RONIN GAI is a character-driven film, certainly not a murder mystery or any such thing, but a study of a group of people whose world no longer has a place for them. It's not a romantic or sympathetic view of the people, and for quite a while I was quite turned off by the film because I didn't actually like any of the main characters - then I realised that I wasn't really supposed to and stopped viewing it as a flaw or mistake, and enjoyed the rest of it a lot more.

Even though the film does contain some pretty gory violence, and a bit of very tame sex, it is still quite slow-paced and sedate. It deals with some pretty ugly people and situations, and can't be considered a cheerful or pleasant film, but it never uses the nastiness or violence in an "exploitation" style... it does actually want us to care for the characters, but isn't going to paint over their flaws to win us over. The fact we do care for them is a tribute to the strength of the writing and especially the acting, which is fantastic. Special mention must go to Shintaro Katsu in this regard, who gives a wonderful performance in what would turn out to be his final film.

The film is quite nicely shot, but has a bit of a "made for TV" feel to it that I couldn't really explain. It doesn't look low-budget, it's shot on film, and it's got lovely sets and costumes and whatnot... but still feels a bit TV movie-ish. Perhaps it's because it's only 16:9 widescreen, and I'm used to seeing Samurai films at full scope ratio? Or it might have been the sound design and music, which seemed a bit too modern for the period setting.

It definitely took a while for RONIN GAI to win me over, because it builds its characters and its world slowly and delicately, with subtle details and touches. It wasn't the film I was expecting it to be (whatever that was), so perhaps it was a while before I adjusted my critical gaze to look at its actual strengths rather than the strengths I'd expected to find. At some point in the film I realised I was liking it quite a lot though, and by the end it was a very satisfying experience.

A brilliant depiction of East Germany's final years

"The Architects" is a brilliant depiction of life in the final years of East Germany's existence. Intellectuals who are on the verge of middle age are stagnating professionally and suffocating intellectually. They can't talk freely; they can't think freely. They have a burning desire to reform and to improve their little socialist country, but obstacles are everywhere. An older, inflexible generation holds on while paying mere lip-service to youth, progress, and innovation. What will happen? Is change possible?

At 38 years of age, Daniel Brenner is a no-longer-young architect looking for his first big break. One of his former professors decides to help him out and introduces Daniel to an older architect who is now a city-planning administrator and Communist Party official. Daniel is asked to put together a team of "young" architects to enter a competition to design a town center. A team of handpicked architects whom he knew in his college days, they propose a center complete with a post office, grocery story, restaurants, cinema, theater, bowling alley, art gallery, and monuments, all situated in architecture that is innovative for East Germany. It signals a fresh start and a new responsiveness.

But here is where Daniel's problems begin. The very officials who appointed him are resistant to change. The proposal is too expensive, too difficult to build, too innovative, too intellectually honest, too everything. Daniel tries to win them over, but can he make a difference? Meanwhile, members of his team are losing faith in him and in the system. Even worse, as he gives everything to push for the proposal, his personal life is falling apart around him. His wife is bored with the monotony of life in East Germany and resentful about the lost chances in her life. Will Daniel have any achievements in his life, or will he be a professional failure, divorced, and trapped in country that doesn't want his input?

This movie was filmed in and around East Berlin in 1989 and 1990. The scenery is stark and accurate. This movie had the bad fortune to be released as East Germany was falling apart and reunification was underway. Audiences no longer cared to dwell on how stultifying East Germany had been. They wanted to look forward. But 20+ years later, this film is a moving and accurate depiction of what life was like for ordinary, educated people slowly being crushed by The System.

Amazing if you like this type of thing

If I showed this to the average cinema-goer they would say its a ridiculous joke. This however is the hardest I've laughed in a long time. A good start as I have never seen another Indian comedy before.

The basic story is Rajni wants to marry a woman called Sheeba but this is not approved by her father.

When he dies and goes to heaven he is informed his death was a mistake and he is reincarnated and sent back to earth in a different body. He comes back in the body of a mild-mannered villager whose life is threatened by an aunt and uncle who are trying to kill him. He eventually takes revenge on them as well as characters from his earlier incarnation.

I have seen this classified as action but it's simply too ridiculous for me to believe this wasn't meant to be a comedy. . The plot doesn't make much sense to me either but if you like silly films with tons of action and kung fu, special effects of people jumping onto roofs by making them jump off and playing it backwards, some of the worst clothes ever, music clips that make David Hasselhoff videos look like high art, using dwarfs as weapons and sliding under a moving truck with a horse (I kid you not) then this is about as good as it gets.
