Sexy Sequel to S.O.S. Conspiracion Bikini

Good but not great sequel to "S.O.S. Conspiracion Bikini" with Julio Aleman as secret agent Alex Dinamo, Mexico's answer to James Bond 007. The film benefits from great location shooting in Mexico, Panama and Puerto Rico and really beautiful Hispanic women, but suffers from formulaic plotting and too many anticlimaxes, contrary to the first film that had a much more linear plot and less characters. Still it's fun to watch. and too bad the series didn't continue after this film. For more Hispanic secret agent films, check out the two spy films Santo(the Mexican Wrestler) did with Jorge Rivero in 1967, which were El Tesoro de Moctezuma and Operacion 67

Illusions of an Alternative...

Bard's film tight-rope walks the authenticity of Vigoesque documented views with the ideological transcendental identification effects of an interrogative process. In that regard, Destroy Yourself might remind some of Wajda's Man of Marble/Man of Iron set, where personal history and collective reflection of a historical moment become intertwined. This intertwining is exposed and foregrounded through the alternation of scenes in sepia tones and black/white while drawn-out blank frames rupture the possibility of integrating the considerations of personal and collective into a clear unity. Perhaps there is a Brechtian challenge behind the film? The spectator must remedy the disparate views into a coherent whole in order to appreciate the immediacy of the individual to the collective historical moment. The kinesthetic flicker sequence is an overt cue to that effect... foregrounding the rupture of auditory and visual with the physical compulsion to listen but also close one's eyes. It serves as an alarm to rouse the spectator into opening one's eyes and to see what is being said. To witness action is to participate in the event. In some ways, Godard's La Chinoise operates on similar principles. Godard plays on the congruence of witness-participant relationships as opposed to a more threatening dialectic rupture Bard is in effect warning against in that relationship. The film hails the unbound quality of freedom and that acts of freedom naturally interpellate all of humanity as the human condition is to be free and to imagine freedom (like the girl's questioning of the freedom of the wall/behind the wall). The film has a kind of staggered procession, unlike Zilnik's Early Works which is continuously infused with a kinetic bond between character and milieu. The female protagonist (de Bendern) claims fear directly after stating that a revolution must be complete. The staggered pace may be seen to reflect the immense anxiety surrounding the Student Demonstration of 1968. The labored pace may authentically reflect the emotional suspension of the moment, however, it compromises the kind of energy and fervor needed to activate fence-sitters and the politically apathetic. Destroy Yourself seems more like the dear-diary confession of a frustrated activist sooner than a documentary-type manifesto of an active revolutionary. The film suffers from being a text which is about nothing in particular and everything in general... and thus has its emotional core in the collective memories of its cast, crew and director sooner than in that of those who lived through the historical moment or study it afterwards. I would find it arrogant to identify with a film that clearly has the precept of invitation but not the will to provide a return address for the RSVP. I still feel that the truest expression of emotion and invitation toward sincere sharing of the historical moment can be found in Med Hondo's Soleil O. Destroy Yourself may lack in revolutionary praxis but remains a text rife with demonstrations of dialectics through the medium. The theories of Brecht, Lacan, Eisenstein, Althusser, Marx and the Frankfurt School could all be evoked to explain the dynamics at play within this film. Although the film is not entertaining, it is intellectually-engaged.

only for completest

Extremely lowbudget nudie offers pretty tame content for a 1969 entry. Undercover reporter Melody Anthem investigates goings-on at Miss Grundy's Finishing School and finds (surprise) that a lot of sex is taking place here. It takes about 3 minutes to get Melody's clothes off; everyone else is already nekkid. For the next 50 mins the actors recite dialogue that sounds semi-improvised and simulate sex -- not very convincingly, for the greater part.

The chief adornment of this no-frills pic is an early performance by the wonderful Barbara Caron (aka Barbara Mills). She has a sex scene, pretty silly, with an older guy playing the school janitor and even tries out her Irish accent. It's not bad, and neither is her acting, even though the script was probably written on a matchbook cover. Her encounter with Suzanne Fields is a little more realistic-looking, but the erotic level is not helped by Cuisinart editing. It looks as if the scene was shot in full from 3 or 4 angles and all of that footage was then spliced together in short cuts, in random order. Or, more likely, much of the picture was shot on film ends, making short takes mandatory. Even in 1969-70 money, it's hard to imagine the budget went much over $1000.

The first scene, with the setup, has a lot of annoying snips in the available print, mostly cutting expository dialogue. If you were watching it for plot you would find this a little frustrating. The cast are enthusiastic enough but the overall trend here is toward silly, rather than sexy. Raincoaters of 1970 probably found this film fairly unsatisfying, but it also doesn't have much that would appeal to the serious film student.

School Scandals is recommended only to two groups of enthusiasts:

a: those who feel they _must_ see every film of this genre ever made (Who, me?)

b: admirers of Barbara Caron who are willing to watch even the dippiest tripe in order to catch another glimpse of her beauty and charm (Guilty, as charged)

A South-of-the-Border James Bond

Made at a time when imitation James Bonds frequently appeared in the world's cinemas, this minor but amusing Mexican entry in that cycle features a lot of the usual Bondisms from the 1960s: evil women in beehive hairdos, go-go dancers in gold boots, men in narrow neckties, a criminal mastermind in a motorized chair, fast cars, flying bullets, elaborate gadgetry, a ladies-man of a hero who -- with the punch of a button -- can play seductive music in his bedroom, etc.

Jorge Rivero, about 30 years old and at his physical peak, makes a handsome leading man and the movie isn't shy about spotlighting his physical attributes. Less than five minutes after the movie starts, he's stripped off his shirt for a romp in an over-sized tub with a couple of eye-candy babes. He's later seen, again stripped to the waist, for a torture-chamber scene in which he's flogged across the back. This flogging ranks 12th in the book, "Lash! The Hundred Great Scenes of Men Being Whipped in the Movies." As usual in Bond movies, the female parts tend to be interchangeable and many details of the plot remain obscure, but this still remains a passable diversion.
